Author John Hanson will give a talk on “Reading the Gravestones of Early New England” at the GAR Hall in Scituate. In this talk, Hanson will discuss the iconography and epitaphs of gravestones from Scituate and around New England and how they reveal colonial New Englanders expressing their attitudes towards life, death, and eternity.

John Hanson has been collecting and studying early New England epitaphs for years. He is the author of Reading the Gravestones of Old New England (McFarland, 2021), a Fellow of the American Antiquarian Society, and has published and spoken extensively on his research.
Mr. Hanson is a Massachusetts native, and lives in Boston and the Berkshires.
